Where the heck did my country go to?

This diary may be shorter than some may like but it needs to be stated. Where is this country headed, and is it headed there in a handbasket? Listen, I'm actually a reformed McCain supporter, but how is this guy seriously doing any of the following: 1). Leading the question of which candidate will keep you safer? 2). Wooing Democrats and women's right's supporters and 3).Scoring 60% favorable ratings. Let's look step by step.

Question 1). We have a candidate who claims to want to keep our troops in Iraq, where even the most ardent supporters state we have most of our resources tied up. So what does a candidate for president do. First, he sings about bombing a sovereign nation for the world to see while running for the highest office in the land. So then less than 6 months later, he responds to a crisis halfway across the world in a matter of hours, as oppossed to waiting for the situation (of no harm to us) to crystalize before shooting his mouth off. This is the guy that is going to keep us safe? Really? Am I missing something? Bellicose is now a peace strategy?

Question 2). Do I really even need to go into what a guy who states he has a 30 year career of opposing women's rights has in store for us? I do, really, I really need to compare Barack and John's plans for women's rights. children's health care to up to 28% of Clinton supporters? I really need to state that for those poor to lower middle class whites in the midwest and south that another 4-8 years of Bush's economic policies is probably not the best idea, g Really, given the current state of affairs? Am I missing something else?

Question 3). A crotchety old man who can't talk issues so he keeps sending out ads comparing his opponent to heiresses and pop stars, who lies in every ad, and who states his opponent only speaks out due to political ambition (says the other dude running for president who as a POW never discusses his POW days, except in every sentence?)

Where is the intelligence in this country? Are people really this content? What am I missing? I even invite the Barack jeering section in here to tell me what's what, please, because I JUST DON'T GET IT!!!

He's running on people's carefully created fears, and how he is a safe old man, wouldn't do bad things. Wouldn't do things that would get them out of what raggedly little bit of their safety zone is left. Doesn't mention the police state or the torture or the fact that the government now has a big file on all of us, or that he could have gotten us killed if he were President when the Georgia thing started. Waves the flag, talks abstract virtues he has never had.

What I don't know at this point is whether he will do better at this than Dole did in '96, which was awful.

The country that elected George Bush? That elected Ronald Reagan twice? That country?

Winning the presidency is hard, especially for Democrats. We win when we run solid, aggressive issue campaigns that embrace our working class base. Obama is running a character campaign and Axelrod and Plouffe think "the white working class has gone to the Republican nominee for many elections", so they aren't trying to win them.

like every fifth ad during the Olympics is a McCain ad saying that he's the original maverick. Is anyone seeing this? Is it effective?

I always sensed a problem with McCain. Four years ago, everyone LOVED him. Even my most liberal family members were behind him over Obama until he was endorsed by Bush.

Yes, Obama is screwing this up, I'll admit it. He's prancing around like nothing's wrong. This reminds me of Ned Lamont's campaign in Connecticut in 2004. I canvassed and volunteered for his campaign in Stamford in the last few months and toward the end that campaign became so complacent and stubborn that they were hopeless.

The American people; they were for the war before they were against it.

Washington - If Republican John McCain needs someone to vouch for his independence, he could easily do worse than Senate colleague Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, a liberal Democrat from a key battleground state.

"I think the guy calls 'em as he sees 'em, and as president would call 'em as he sees 'em, and would make people mad all over the place because it wouldn't fit anybody's playbook," said Feingold, who teamed up with McCain to rewrite federal campaign laws.

"He would be very original," Feingold said.

'Soul mate' on reform
But Feingold's history with McCain is much richer, especially the six-year bonding experience that was McCain-Feingold, a legislative Long March that annoyed people in both parties before it improbably passed Congress and was signed by President Bush. The two even hit the road together to drum up public support before the final Senate debate, McCain telling one New Orleans audience, "Russ and I are happy warriors."

"He's a very good legislator from my point of view, because when he gets onto something, he doesn't just want to introduce a bill, he likes to move it. And he's fearless," Feingold said of McCain, who once called the Wisconsin Democrat a "philosophical soul mate" on reform issues. (The two partnered on several other bills in addition to campaign finance.)

"People couldn't believe how long we stayed on McCain-Feingold. . . . We'd come to those press conferences (year after year) and you guys would laugh at us, I mean, literally," said Feingold, grinning.

"He's a great guy to fight an uphill battle with legislatively. He keeps his word. . . . I probably shouldn't be saying this stuff, but to be honest about it, it was one of the better professional experiences I've ever had in my life," Feingold said.

I don't think, personally, that McCain's "crotchety old man" status has much to do with his policy positions. He was probably WORSE in a less crotchety state.

As a former Gore, then Clinton supporter, I will admit that I gave McCain a fleeting glance, but I could never vote for this man.

I thank him for his service to our country. I applaud his ability to survive Vietnam and all the trauma that occurs upon returning to the USA. And I intend to thank him as he returns to the Senate full time to work with President Obama!

And one has to wonder how supposed democrats can put themselves before their country, just because their chosen candidate lost. This election is NOT about Obama or Clinton, it's about putting our country back on the right track.
